Making room for yourself when everyone needs something

1 min read

“How do you make room for yourself when everyone else needs something from you?”

The advice given to people in this position is usually some version of self-care, which lands badly, because it implies the problem is that you haven’t thought of resting.

You have thought of it. The issue is arithmetic. There are children, or ageing parents, or a team, or all three, and the hours are already spoken for.

Nothing frees up on its own

Space does not appear at the end of a period of effort. There is no quiet season coming. Something has to be removed, disappointed, or handed to someone else — and each of those has a name attached.

That is the real obstacle. Not time management. The specific person who will notice.

What you have said yes to and no longer mean

Go through the week and find the agreements you made as a different person, in different circumstances, that nobody has thought to review. Some were never even requested — you assumed them and then treated them as obligations.

Also worth noticing: being needed is not only a burden. It is often load-bearing for how we understand ourselves, which makes reducing it more complicated than it appears.

You do not need a retreat. You need one thing per week that is genuinely yours, defended slightly rudely.

If you are at the point where you don’t need another article, you need someone to think through the situation with you. That is the work I do.
