Life
Why do I feel stuck in life when nothing is obviously wrong?
3 min read
Because stuck is not the same as unhappy, and it does not need a disaster to justify it. You can have a life that works, people who love you, a job that pays, and still feel like you are standing in a room with the doors painted on.
The absence of an obvious problem is often what makes it worse. A crisis is legible. Other people understand it. This does not come with a reason you can hand anyone, which is why most people say nothing for a very long time.
Stuck is a moment, not a personality
It is worth saying plainly: you are not a stuck person. You are a person in a period where movement has stopped making sense. Those are different things, and the second one passes.
In my experience it is rarely a lack of energy or ambition. The women I speak to are usually running several lives at once with considerable competence. What has gone quiet is not capability. It is direction.
What is often underneath it
One: you already know something, and you have not said it out loud. Some part of you has drawn a conclusion, the rest of you has not agreed to hear it, and the standoff feels like paralysis.
Two: you are waiting for certainty. You are hunting for the option with no cost. It does not exist. Every real choice takes something from you, and looking for the one that does not is a very reasonable-sounding way of never moving.
Three: the question you are turning over is not the real one. People spend months deciding about a job when the actual subject is how tired they are, or who they became to keep everything running.
Four: nothing is wrong, and something has changed anyway. You are not the person who set this life up. Lives do not update themselves when you do.
Overthinking is not thinking
Going round in circles feels like diligence. It feels responsible. But if you have thought about the same thing forty times and arrived nowhere, you are not gathering information any more. You are managing the discomfort of not having decided.
Thinking has an end point. Circling does not. The tell is simple: real thinking changes something. If the loop always lands in the same place, it is not the thinking that is missing.
Questions worth sitting with
What would I do if nobody would be disappointed? Not as a fantasy. As information about what I have been organising around.
When did this start? Most people can name a season, sometimes a specific month. What happened around it usually matters.
What am I afraid I will find out if I look at this properly? That answer is frequently the whole thing.
And: what has stayed true through all of it? People forget to look at what has not moved. It tends to be the part worth building from.
What you do not have to decide right now
You do not have to know what you want. You do not have to leave anything, tell anyone, or produce a plan. You do not have to establish whether this is serious enough to count.
The first honest move is smaller than that. It is naming what is actually going on, in words you would not use in front of people who need you to be fine.
After that, movement usually returns on its own. Not because the situation resolved, but because you stopped negotiating with yourself about whether you are allowed to find it difficult.
If you are at the point where you don’t need another article, you need someone to think through the situation with you. That is the work I do.
