Becoming

You don't need a new personality. You need less interference.

“What if I don't need to become someone else. I need to become more myself?”

An enormous amount of money is made from the idea that you are a project. Not finished. Not efficient enough. One framework away from being acceptable.

I don’t believe that, and I have not found it to be true in the room. Most people I work with are not underdeveloped. They are over-adapted.

Over-adapted, not underdeveloped

Years of adjusting: tone, ambition, how much space to take, how much to want. Each adjustment reasonable at the time. Collectively they add up to a person who is very good at fitting in and no longer entirely sure what they would do if they weren’t.

The work then is subtraction, which is unsatisfying to sell because it does not come with modules.

How you'd know it's happening

You get faster at saying no. Fewer conversations require a warm-up. You stop preparing a justification before stating a preference. Your calendar starts to look like your actual priorities, which is frequently the most confronting part.

Nothing new was added. Something that was already there stopped being interrupted.

If you are at the point where you don’t need another article, you need someone to think through the situation with you. That is the work I do.
