The identity that got you here has an expiry date

1 min read

“Who am I when the identity that got me here no longer fits?”

You became someone specific in order to get here. The one who fixes things. The one who never drops the ball. The one who is always fine.

It worked. That is the problem. Identities that work are extremely difficult to put down, because everyone around you has organised themselves around them.

The quiet symptoms

Not a crisis. Irritation at things that never used to irritate you. A flatness after achievements. A slight performance in the way you talk about your own work. The sensation of doing an accurate impression of yourself.

That is not burnout, necessarily. It can be a role outliving its usefulness.

You don't have to renounce it

The dramatic version says: destroy the old self. In practice it is closer to demotion. The competent, capable one stays on staff. It just no longer runs the company.

What tends to be hard is not the internal shift. It is that other people liked the old arrangement, and some of them will experience your change as a withdrawal of service. A few will not stay. That is the real cost, and it is worth naming before you start rather than after.

If you are at the point where you don’t need another article, you need someone to think through the situation with you. That is the work I do.
